Superheroes have a lot to learn!
- It is very important that your child practice reading and writing his/her first and last name.
- Superheroes should know the names of their guardians, their home address, and phone number.
- Superheroes should know how to ask for help when they are scared, sad, or need something.
- Superheroes raise their hand when they want to get the teacher's attention.
- Superheroes keep their hands to themselves.
- Superheroes need to learn to be responsible and clean up after themselves.
- Superheroes need to know how to wash their hands with soap and warm water.

May Updates
It is so hard to believe that June is just around the corner. Our students have made so much progress. It is that time of year where we are completing many assessments and challenging ourselves to increase our reading and writing stamina. Many of our students need to increase their writing stamina. What does this mean? Students need to develop the ability to write consistently for a sufficient amount of time. In this technology savvy world our children are used to things being "quick and fast". This can be good, but at times it can cause frustration with tasks that involve time. Daily writing will help build writing stamina and confidence.
ELA: Practice reading comprehension skills. Students must be able to retell a story and correctly identify the following elements: title, setting, characters, main idea.
Math: We are focusing on equations, algebra (yes I said algebra). greater than, less than, equal and not equal. We are learning about measurement and building numbers using our base ten place value system.
Social Studies/Science: Students are learning about maps, geography, Michigan, and the world.
April 25, 2016
This week we are exploring the plant life cycle. We have special surprises for our families next week. We are learning about the scientific process. Our science vocabulary words: observation, prediction, hypothesis.
We are working on building our teen numbers using place value models and proving our addition facts by modeling why 4+1=5. I will be sending home guided notes for parents to review our vocabulary and support our content at home.
Rhyme, segmenting, blending, and are all extremely important skills to help our students increase their reading growth. Work on stretching a word and asking your children to listen and then put the word together. Email me if you need support in this area.
Students need to be able to retell the stories they read or listen to. For example, every story should have a beginning, middle, and end. Ask your child to retell and identify the main idea of the story, the author/illustrator, setting, and characters. They are being assessed on all of these concepts.
Can your student write their last name? This week we are going to practice writing our first and last name. Please practice at home.
il 1, 2016
We are continuing to work on our digraphs, blends, and high frequency words.
We are working on adding and subtracting numbers, recognizing place value, and shapes.
Now that it is spring, we will be learning about baby animals, plant life, and spring weather.
There is a lot to learn still and I am so proud of the progress they have made thus far. Keep up the great work at home.
February 29th-March 11, 2016
March is Reading Month! We will have many fun activities planned for the month of March. We will continue studying the concepts of past, present, and future. A project will be in your child's Friday Folder.
We are focusing on forming opinions and supporting our opinions in writing. Please encourage your child to stretch sounds and check that beginning sounds are correct.
In Math we are working on the concepts of addition and subtraction. We are expanding our math vocabulary and learning how to recognize "math words".

This month we will study the concept of past, present, and future. Each kindergarten student will be asked to create a poster representing their past, present, and future! January 18-30, 2016
January has a lot going on!!! Please be sure to check your child's daily homework folder and purple Friday folder.
This month we began our word family study. It is extremely important that all students are continuing to practice their literacy and math skills at home. By this time in the school year all students should be proficient with their letter identification and sounds. If your child is continuing to struggle with this please practice at home. Next week I am continuing to assess kindergarten high frequency words, math skills, and writing. We are learning how to be a Star Writer. Kindergarten students need to recognize that all sentences begin with a capital and end with punctuation. A lot of the children would benefit from daily writing practice at home. I recommend having them write one sentence each day using our high frequency words and word family words.
I am beginning to word study assessments on Friday. I will be asking students to write words from the weekly word family and/or words from the kindergarten high frequency word list. PLEASE PRACTICE AT HOME. THEY MUST KNOW THEIR COLOR WORDS!!!
In Science and Social Studies we are learning about the seasons, needs/wants, goods/services, and continuing with weather study.
With Jump Rope for Heart just around the corner we will begin to learn about staying healthy. February is dental health month and we will learn a lot about healthy teeth and gums.

Happy New Year!!! It is so wonderful seeing all of my students today. I enjoyed hearing about their holiday and all the fun they had with their families. I am guessing that many of them will come home very tired this week!
January is a busy month and we have a lot to learn. We will continue with our phonemic awareness studies, handwriting, and sight words. Please practice the Kindergarten High Frequency Words at home.
At the end of January we will be taking our mid NWEA assessment on the computers. If you are able to practice click and dragging skills at home it would be beneficial. We are practicing here as well.

Weekly I can Statements...
I can be a Violet All Star Student!!
During our centers or Daily 5 time students are learning the importance of cooperation and how to use a whisper voice. This is very important in order for us to create an environment that everyone can learn in. If you notice that your child's color chart reflects lots of reminders and warnings, please encourage your child to practice using a whisper voice and/or working with others.
I have taught the children how to whisper read, buddy read, and read to self. We practice these skills daily so that we can be successful.
How does a kindergarten student read to self?
Students are taught to pick a book that is a good fit. When students read to themselves they are to stay in one spot, read quietly (read the pictures, words, and retell), whisper read with our whisper phones or by covering our ears, and retell the story from beginning to end.
